Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is almost always caused by
previous exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant cells develop
in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body's
internal organs. Its most common site is the pleura (outer lining of
the lungs and chest cavity), but it may also occur in the peritoneum
(the lining of the abdominal cavity) or the pericardium (a sac that
surrounds the heart).
Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they
inhaled asbestos particles, or have been exposed to asbestos dust and
fibre in other ways, such as by washing the clothes of a family member
who worked with asbestos, or by home renovation using asbestos cement
products. Unlike lung cancer, there is no association between
mesothelioma and smoking.
Mesothelioma is preventable if precautionary measures are used within
certain working environments. Mesothelioma attorneys bring suit against
companies who have deceived their employees about exposure to asbestos
while the employees were working for them. Many people who have been
diagnosed with this type of cancer have a right to compensation in the
form of money, but most states enforce a statute of limitations
regulating how long a person can wait to file for monetary compensation
after there has been a diagnoses. It is important that an asbestos
lawyer be contacted soon after a diagnosis has been made.
Individuals who have been diagnosed with Mesothelioma are not the only
persons eligible for monetary compensation. Loved ones who have
survived after a death related to this cancer or caretakers within the
family are eligible to collect.
Most Mesothelioma lawyers work on a win get paid basis. This means that
they collect their fee out of what the client gets from their
settlement, which makes filing for compensation easier for most people.
